Melanin Meets Mindfulness is a wellness-based program dedicated to teaching the principles of mindfulness, while centering the experiences of African-American women in the process. The mission of Melanin Meets Mindfulness is to create safe emotional spaces for African-American women to tap into their inner wisdom, guided by the principles of mindfulness: nonjudgment, compassion, and embracing the moment as it is. We are also teaching the importance of slowing down, getting still, listening for and paying attention to self, in order to learn what our spirits need to grow and thrive.
My name is Dr. Shacunda Rodgers, and I am a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice, where I treat teens and adults in individual, couples, and family therapy. For the 13 years that I have been a psychologist, I have been teaching and practicing mindfulness for the last 12 of them. I have found that mindfulness, with regular practice, brings not only a sense of being centered and balanced, but also helps with being more kind and compassionate—toward one's own self as well as others. It also strengthens your ability to “show up” and be more present in day-to-day life. As a long term benefit, mindfulness has a way of making sunny days feel brighter, and also strengthens your capacity to weather and endure those darker days as well.
Mindfulness, Meditation & Manifestation: A Group for African-American Women
In today’s political climate, combined with the long and complicated history of race relations in this country, safe spaces for African-American people are increasingly needed in order to promote sharing, healing, and growth—both individually and collectively. Also, as an African-American woman who works in the field of mental health, it has become both a personal and professional mission of mine to establish these kinds of spaces, precisely because there are so few. As a result, I am starting a new group with that specific goal in mind, to create and hold space for African-American women who want to learn strategies for self-care and growth.
For the first time since our inaugural retreat in 2018, Melanin Meets Mindfulness is hosting our second mindfulness retreat. Join us on Saturday, April 2, 2022, where we will be exploring the theme, “A Day of Ritual, Reclamation, and Reconnection.” We plan to offer the opportunity for Black women to slow down the hectic pace of their lives, rest their bodies, settle the mind, and tap into the heart. The goal is simple—to hold sacred space together, to reclaim ourselves, reconnect with our spirit, reconnection with one another in community, and renew ourselves through compassionate and tender care.
